KK Sets Another Masters World Hour Record

KK's Colleague Weighs In On His Second World Record Attempt

When KK isn't out training for his next big race or world record, he is an Inside Sales Representative for Giant Bicycle, Inc. Here is what one of his outside Account Executives, Cindy Lacotta, has to say about his second attempt at a World Record:

1. Howlong have you known KK? Where did you meet?

CL: I have“known” KK for a long time…I remember when he first came on board withGiant. Our AE at the time (I worked at a shop then) couldn’t wait to tellus about his new inside partner. I can still remember him excitedlytalking about all of KK’s accomplishments…raced pro, managed Susan DiMatteiwhen she won USA’s first ever Olympic mountain biking medal, etc. Iactually did not physically get to meet him until years later…it seemed thatour Interbike schedules never meshed. It was good to finally put the faceto the voice!

2. Whatdo you think of KK going for another World Record and his chances of breakinganother record?

CL: I thinkit is awesome. Giant has the best bikes in the world, and there is nobetter way to prove it. I know all of the training that KK putsin…I love hearing about his workouts…and it is great to see an end result likean hour record. Also, even though it might sound like watching someone goaround and around for an hour is pretty boring, I have to say that watching hisfirst record breaking run was one of the most exciting sporting events I haveever witnessed…I am so glad I was able to be there in person to be a part ofthe experience.

3. Howhas KK’s World Hour Record attempts influenced you?

CL: I amalways inspired every time I hear about one of KK’s workouts. I alwayslike to try them and see how I stack up. (not well!) KK is also arole model to me that he is still so successful at such a, um, matureage. J I refuse to believe that age is an excuse…KK isthe perfect illustration of that. He is also a role model to me in how tobalance work and with an intense training and racing schedule. Any time Iskip a workout and use work as an excuse, I think of KK. It is all aboutbeing well organized and very disciplined.

4. Whatis the general feedback from retailers when learning of KK’s second attempt?

CL: Mydealers are very excited about this. Almost all of my dealers have hisautographed poster hanging up; many of them watched the live streaming webcastof his first record ride. Dealers love hearing about race results fromour sponsored athletes (Adam Craig, Katie Compton, Rabobank, etc.), but KK isextra special because he is one of us. He is someone we actually get totalk to every day. He is a working Joe. And, um, there’s thatmature thing again. He is an inspiration to all of us.

5. Whatwords of advice/encouragement do you have for KK?

CL: Gofast. Turn left. J

6. Whatis your most memorable KK memory?

CL: One ofthe things I remember the most from his first ride is the last few laps. All of us who came to see him were leaned over the rails and wereslapping the boards to cheer him on. The feeling was absolutely electric! However, I still think my most memorable KK memory was watching him step offhis bike and almost collapse. I have never seen KK so utterly wastedbefore. I remember that was when it really sunk into me how epic his ridewas. KK made it look so easy while he out there on the track! J

We got a chance to have a quick Q&A with Pat Benson,fellow track rider of KK’s and an awesome photographer (Thank you, Pat). Check it out below:

Q: How long have youknown KK? How did you meet?

A: I've beenriding at the Home Depot Center for five years and saw KK training and racingthere, and competing at the Encino Velodrome. The track community is small and close-knit,and I've gotten to know KK and his wife, Kat, over the years.

Q: What is yourfavorite memory of KK?

A: My favoritememory of KK is of him outwitting riders who were far younger than him in thepoints race at elite track nationals two years ago to advance to the final. Heis incredibly talented, but just as important he races smart.

Q: What do you thinkof KK going for another World Record and his chances of breaking anotherrecord?

A: I have nodoubt that KK will break the record again.

Q: How have KK’sWorld Hour Record attempts influenced you?

A: KK is aninspiration for many reasons. He's down to earth and a family man, and hasmanaged to race at the highest levels throughout his career. He's had a lifededicated to the sport--something that's very hard to sustain. And the secondhour attempt is an extension of everything he has worked for. He's the bestexample I know of what an older athlete can achieve with hard work,experience and talent.

Q: How do youthink KK’s World Hour Record will affect Master’s Track Cycling or the Cyclingcommunity in general?

A: KK makeseveryone want to work harder to achieve their dreams.

Q: What words ofadvice/encouragement do you have for KK?

A: KK, I'm proudto know you. I will be there to cheer you on.

This World Hour Record attempt is personal for KK. He is dedicating it to Michelle Weiser, a dear friend and co-worker at Giant Bicycle who lost her battle with Breast Cancer, July 5th, 2010.

He won the gold medal in:

It's official, KK has received the letter from the USADA announcing that his required drug sample came back negative (drug free). That does not suprise me I've seen him train. Woohoo!! That means he officially holds the title of Masters 50+ World Hour Record holder. Congrats again KK.

Wow, what an exciting day! KK looked strong from the start and did an amazing job! CONGRATULATIONS KK!!! YOU ROCKED IT!!

There was a nice showing of people who came to watch Keith "KK" Ketterer at the velodrome and witnessed history being made. His parents came all the way from Michigan. Friends, co-workers and sponsors were all lined up cheering him on. A couple people even drove/ flew in for the day from Northern California & Arizona, just to watch and support KK. AWESOME! There were ever over 120 people at times online watching the live streaming video. It was great to see the love and support for him on his big day. Thank you very much for supporting and following KK on his journey to becoming the new Masters 50+ World Hour Record Holder. I wonder what's next for KK. Stay tuned to find out...

Three Days & 5 Questions

Only three days to go and the excitement is building. KK's skin suit arrived from Hincapie yesterday and everything is on schedule and ready to roll.

I asked KK 5 questions to share with you. Here they are:

1. How did you get involved in track racing? What’s kept you competing?

KK: A friend and Teammate, Dan Vogt lent me a track bike back in 2005. Dan helped me get certified at the LA Velodrome and I was hooked from that moment on! I love to race, no question about that!

2. Do you have any rituals that you do before a big race?

KK: No rituals, I do a fair amount of race-simulation training, including warm-up so the body already knows what to do on race day.

3. Do you have a mantra/phrase or philosophy that helps keep you mentally focused during a race?

KK: I’m a blue-collar bike racer, just put-in the work and on race day it pays off. I’m EXTREMLY competitive, very systematic and I enjoy a challenge, but I especially enjoy the process!

4. What do you normally eat for breakfast the day of a race?

KK: Same thing I eat everyday! Nothing changes on race day! I get up, brew a lovely cup of French Roast and pop an English muffin in the toast, slather the muffin with organic peanut butter an honey. That’s first breakfast, then later a 2nd cup of French Roast with Oatmeal and Raisins. Then, 3rd breakfast, about mid-morning, yogurt, banana, apple. Then I start thinking about my lunch!!

5. What advice do you have for riders just getting into the sport?

KK: Work hard, work hard some more and after training over long periods of time, you will be rewarded with success!

Wednesday Night Session at BodyFix

Had a great session last night with Dr Rich and Janis Burns at BodyFix. I’m holding adjustments and my body seems to be taking to the therapy very well. My massage session with Janis Burns was even more encouraging. Janis says, I’ve become much more flexible since we first started. That explains why I’ve doing so well in training sessions with Roger. I’ve definitely “gained power and comfort in each pedal stroke”.
